About Meditation

What is Meditation?

BKS Iyengar, in Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, desribes meditation as follows:

The characteristic feature of meditation (dhyana) is the maintenance of an uninterrupted flow of attention on a fixed point or region, without intervention. In dhyana, psychological and chronological time come to a standstill as the mind observes its own behaviour. The intensity of attention in the field of consciousness neither alters nor wavers, remaining as stable, smooth and constant as oil pouring from a jug. Maintaining the same intensity of awareness, the attentive awareness moves from one-pointed concentration to no-pointed attentiveness.

General Info

Open to all students, this 1 1/2 to 2 hour session introduces the yogic art of dhyana (meditation).

This class will consist of a gentle guided meditation aimed at introducing students to the art of meditation

Meditation can be highly worthwhile activity: by developing calm it can improve our sense of well-being, by increasing mindfulness it can improve our sense of being at one with ourselves, by linking with Yoga it can increase our energy or 'bounce' - and it can be fun!

The class is conducted by Devamani. She has studied yoga in Bihar, India and ran a yoga studio in Asia for eight years. Most recently, Devanami spent four years at the Satyananda Yoga Academy of Mangrove Mountain as a senior lecturer in yogic studies. She has been teaching yoga for 15 years.
